Forestry mulching in Rio Rancho

On a windy Rio Rancho lot, grinding the brush where it stands can leave a layer that helps hold the sand, which is often a better fit than scraping the lot bare.

Mulch it or scrape it?

Both clear the lot. What you plan to do with it decides which one fits.

What mesa brush turns into

Chamisa and other woody desert shrubs mulch into a coarse layer of shredded stems that sits on the sand and breaks down slowly. Tumbleweeds are another story. They're light and dry, and shredded tumbleweed doesn't hold much of anything, so we often gather and haul the big piles and mulch the rooted brush.

Mulch is not a guarantee against wind. On an open lot in Rio Rancho Estates, a strong wind can still move loose sand. But a lot with a mulch layer and roots left in the ground generally holds better than one that has been scraped.

Because the mulcher works on top of the ground, it doesn't dig, which also means roots and stumps stay in place. That's fine for a lot you're holding. It's not what you want under a foundation.

Where mulching fits on a mesa parcel

  • Opening up a vacant lot so you or a buyer can walk it
  • Clearing a strip along the lot line before fencing
  • Cutting a path so a surveyor can find buried pins
  • Clearing around a planned build area while keeping cover on the rest
  • Knocking down brush along your future driveway route

Trash comes out before the mulcher goes in

Vacant lots at the edges of the city tend to collect dumped debris. A mulching head can't process tires, metal or bagged trash, and running over them can throw debris. We pick out and haul the trash first, then mulch what's left.

Forestry mulching questions in Rio Rancho

Can you mulch my lot and still build on it later?

Yes. When the build starts, the mulch and roots get stripped from the pad and driveway area, and the mulch on the rest of the lot can stay. That way the lot keeps some cover until construction.

Will the city accept a mulched lot for a weed notice?

Mulching cuts down the weeds and brush, but whether that satisfies a specific notice is up to the City of Rio Rancho. Read the notice, and if it's unclear, ask the city what they expect before we start.

Can your mulcher reach a lot on a dirt road?

The mulcher is a tracked machine that arrives on a trailer, so the truck and trailer set the limit. We check the road during the walk and tell you if access needs work first.
