Bernalillo County
Land clearing & tree removal in the North Valley
Big lots, old trees, irrigation ditches and soil that holds water. The North Valley is a different kind of clearing job from anywhere else in Albuquerque.
Old lots, old trees, river soil
The North Valley grew up around farming and irrigation, and a lot of properties still feel that way: half-acre and acre lots, horse pens, old orchards and long rows of trees along the property lines. Many of those tree rows are now Siberian elm, Russian olive or salt cedar that have spread far past where anyone planted them.
The soil is different too. Instead of the sand and caliche up on the mesas, the valley floor is river silt and clay. It’s easier to dig, but it holds water, gets soft after rain or irrigation, and drains poorly when a lot is graded flat. We grade so water moves where it should.
Jurisdiction is a patchwork here. Some North Valley addresses are inside Albuquerque city limits and others are in unincorporated Bernalillo County, with the Village of Los Ranchos in the middle. Who you talk to about permits and notices depends on which side of the line your parcel is on.

Before we start in the North Valley
- City or county? Check your parcel’s jurisdiction. The City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County each have their own weed, litter and grading rules. If you received a notice, it says who sent it.
- Irrigation. Many lots are served by MRGCD ditches. Don’t block or fill a ditch or its easement; work on the ditch itself needs the district’s approval.
- Wet ground. We schedule heavy equipment for when the soil is firm enough to work without rutting.
- Utilities. We request a New Mexico 811 locate before digging. Older valley properties can also have private lines 811 doesn’t mark, so tell us about wells, septic systems and buried irrigation you know of.
Rules change and vary by property. We help you check what applies; we don’t give legal advice or guarantee permit decisions.

North Valley questions
Will the elms grow back after you remove them?
Siberian elm and several other invasive trees re-sprout from roots and stumps. Grinding or pulling the stump helps a lot; we’ll explain the options for your trees.
How do I know if my property is in the city or the county?
Bernalillo County has an online tool for finding a property’s permitting jurisdiction, and your property tax bill or notice will also tell you. We can help you check during the estimate.
Can you work around my septic system and well?
Yes. Show us where they are during the walk-through and we keep equipment clear of them.
