Caliche removal for Rio Rancho builds and yards

Plenty of Rio Rancho lots are soft sand from top to bottom. Some aren't, and you find out when a footing trench or utility line stops a couple of feet down on a hard white layer. That's when we come in.

Sand on top doesn't mean sand all the way down

Wind-blown mesa sand can hide caliche underneath, and lots on the same street don't always match. If you're buying or planning a build, a test hole before construction tells you far more than the surface ever will. We can dig one during the free estimate.

Where Rio Rancho projects run into caliche

Footings for a new home

The builder's crew hits caliche partway through the trench. We rip or hammer the rest of the trench to depth so the schedule can recover.

Utility trench to the street

Water, sewer or power lines have to reach the house, and a hard layer can run the whole length of the trench.

Retaining wall in an existing backyard

The top of the dig is sand, and the bottom is cemented. Breaking it takes a different machine setup than the rest of the excavation.

Trees that won't grow

A tree planted in a new yard sits stunted because its roots hit caliche. A wider, deeper planting hole broken through the layer gives it room.

How we work through a caliche layer

  1. 1

    Find its depth and thickness

A test dig shows where the layer starts and roughly how hard it is.

  2. 2

    Request the locate

We put in a New Mexico 811 request before any breaking or digging.

  3. 3

    Rip what will rip

A ripper tooth on the excavator breaks thinner or softer caliche into pieces the bucket can move.

  4. 4

    Hammer what won't

Thick, solid layers get a hydraulic hammer, then the broken material is dug out.

  5. 5

    Haul or reuse

Broken caliche is hauled away or, where it suits, kept on the lot as fill.

Worth sorting out before your build reaches the hard layer

  • Whether a soils report or your engineer flagged caliche
  • Exactly where footings, trenches and any walls will go
  • Truck access on unpaved roads for haul-off loads
  • Whether broken material can stay on the lot
  • How the breaking fits your builder's schedule

Rio Rancho caliche questions

Is caliche common on Rio Rancho lots?

It shows up on some lots and not others. Many are sand to the depth a house needs. The only way to know for your lot is to dig and look.

Can broken caliche stay on my lot as fill?

Sometimes. It can work for low spots or rough fill away from the house. Whether it's acceptable under a pad or foundation is your engineer's call.

My builder hit caliche mid-job. Can you come out quickly?

Call us with the address and what the crew is seeing. We'll get out as soon as our schedule allows and work with your builder on sequencing.
