Grading and leveling in Albuquerque
From sandy Westside lots to rocky Foothills backyards, we cut, fill and compact Albuquerque ground so it drains away from your house and holds its shape.
Why one grade plan won't work on every side of town
A backyard off Coors on the Westside is mostly loose sand. It cuts easily, but fill dumped in one thick layer settles, and a bare slope erodes in the first hard rain. We place fill in lifts, compact each one, and shape the finished surface so it holds.
In the Northeast Heights and Foothills the problem flips. Decomposed granite and caliche resist the blade, boulders show up a foot down, and lots often tilt toward the street or the house behind. Rough grading there can mean ripping or breaking rock before the shape comes together.
Valley lots in the North and South Valley sit on river silt. It digs without a fight but holds water, so a yard graded too flat stays soggy for days after a storm.
Matching the fix to what your yard is doing
| What you're seeing | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Water pooling against the foundation after storms | Cut the high side, build up the low side, and set a slope that carries water away from the walls |
| Runoff heading into the neighbor's yard | Reshape the grade so water stays on your lot until it reaches the street or a swale |
| Infill lot for a garage or casita | Rough grade the lot, then build and compact the pad area to the elevation on your builder's plans |
| A rocky slope you can't use | Break out rock where needed, cut a level terrace, and finish grade for landscaping or gravel |
| Tired landscaping over lumpy old fill | Strip and haul it off, then fine grade a smooth base for xeriscape, turf or pavers |
Dust and drainage rules inside city limits
Larger grading jobs may need a fugitive dust control permit from the city's air quality program, which covers Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Work that changes how water leaves a lot can also call for an approved grading and drainage plan, and lots near an arroyo may face extra review. We'll help you find out what applies, but the agencies make those calls.
How a backyard regrade runs, start to finish
- 1
Walk the yard
We look at where runoff collects, where it leaves your property and how a machine gets in. In older neighborhoods like Nob Hill, the gate width often decides which machine we bring.
- 2
Locate and stake
We request a New Mexico 811 locate, then mark finished grades with stakes or string lines, including any elevations from your engineer or builder.
- 3
Rough grade
High spots come down and low spots are filled in compacted lifts. Extra soil or rock is hauled off unless you'd like it kept on site.
- 4
Finish pass and slope check
A final smoothing pass readies the surface for landscaping, gravel or concrete, and we check the fall away from the house before we pack up.

Albuquerque grading questions
My weed notice is handled, but the lot is lumpy now. Can you level it after clearing?
Yes. Once the brush and debris are gone, we can rough grade the lot so it drains and looks maintained. If a build is coming, tell us, so we grade toward your future pad instead of redoing the work later.
Can a compact machine really regrade a fenced backyard?
In many cases, yes. We match the equipment to the gate and the space. A tight yard can take longer than an open lot, and we'll tell you up front if any corner needs hand work.
Do I need an engineer to regrade my yard in the city?
Small backyard regrades often don't, but larger projects, or ones that change where water leaves the lot, may need an approved grading and drainage plan. We'll tell you what we see during the estimate and can build from an engineer's plan if you have one.
