Driveway and lane grading in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque

Village properties often have long gravel drives and field lanes that cross acequias and get cut up by trailers and tractors. We regrade and resurface them so they hold up between irrigation turns.

Ditch crossings come first

Many Los Ranchos drives cross or run beside acequias, usually managed by MRGCD. Culverts, crossings or any work in a ditch or its easement need the district's approval before we start. Los Ranchos also has its own zoning and permits, so check with the village before building a new drive or making larger changes.

Drives that share space with fields and horses

In the village, a driveway is often more than a way to the garage. It's a lane past the pasture, a route for hay deliveries and a turnaround for the horse trailer, sometimes lined with old trees the owners want to keep.

Irrigated silt and loam make a decent roadbed when dry but soften fast when field water seeps under the drive. Lifting the drive a little, adding compacted base course and crowning it so water runs to the edges keeps it usable between turns.

Typical Los Ranchos driveway projects

Resurfacing a long gravel drive

We regrade the old drive, fill potholes, recrown it and spread fresh surface gravel.

A lane between pastures

Equipment and trailers rut field lanes. We rebuild them with base so a tractor or truck can use them in wet weather.

Parking for a trailer or RV

A compacted gravel pad off the drive gives you somewhere to park without sinking into the pasture.

A drive lined with mature trees

We grade carefully along tree-lined drives and talk with you before working anywhere near large roots.

Choices to make before we resurface

  • How wide the drive needs to be for your trailer or equipment
  • Where a turnaround or parking pad should go
  • Whether surface gravel runs all the way to the road or stops near the house
  • Which trees along the drive must stay untouched
  • Whether existing gravel can be reused or should be hauled off

Los Ranchos driveway questions

Do I need the village's permission to regrade my existing driveway?

We can't speak for the village. Reworking an existing drive is usually a smaller matter than building a new one, but Los Ranchos sets its own rules, so ask before larger changes. We'll flag anything during the estimate that looks worth checking.

Can my old gravel be reused?

Sometimes. If it's still fairly clean, we can regrade it into the new surface. If it's mixed with mud, it's usually better to haul it off and start with fresh base and gravel.
