Trenching for fields, barns and casitas in Los Ranchos

In Los Ranchos, a trench is as likely to carry irrigation water to a field as power to a barn. Both have to share the ground with acequias, old trees and pasture you want back afterward.

What decides how a village trench goes

We look at these on every Los Ranchos walk-through before quoting.

Distance across open land
Big lots mean long runs from the house or meter to a barn, well or field.
Ditch crossings
Any route that crosses or follows an MRGCD acequia or its easement needs the district's approval first, and may need to change.
Mature trees
Routing around large trees protects their roots and keeps you clear of any village tree rules.
Irrigation turns
Fields that were just watered stay soft, so the dig waits until the ground firms up.
Existing private lines
Wells, septic systems and old irrigation pipe aren't marked by 811, so we need to know where they are.

Buried irrigation from the ditch

Many Los Ranchos owners want to move water from their ditch turnout to a pasture, garden or orchard through pipe instead of an open lateral. We dig the trench and backfill it after you or your irrigation contractor lays the pipe.

The connection at the ditch is the part to settle first. Work on or at the acequia itself typically needs MRGCD's permission, so plan that before the trench is dug and leave the last stretch until you have an answer.

Ask the village about your project

The Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque has its own zoning and permits. A trench for a new building or service may be part of a larger permit, so check with the village and your licensed installer about what their work needs. We request a New Mexico 811 locate before every dig.

Trenching questions in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque

Can you dig the trench while my field is still being irrigated?

We'd rather not. Wet valley loam is heavy, the trench can fill with water and machines leave ruts. We plan the work for a dry stretch between watering turns.

Do you lay the irrigation pipe yourselves?

We dig and backfill. You or your irrigation contractor lay the pipe, and we come back to fill and compact the trench once it's in.

Can the trench go along my fence line to stay out of the pasture?

Usually, yes, as long as it stays clear of the ditch easement and any tree roots you want to protect. Fence lines are often the easiest route on big lots.
