Trenching in Tanoan's landscaped yards

A trench through a finished Tanoan yard has to come out looking like it was never there. We dig narrow, keep spoil contained and work around the landscaping and irrigation you already paid for.

What gets trenched in an established yard

Most trenching in Tanoan West and Tanoan East is for upgrades to homes that are already built: power out to new pool equipment, gas to an outdoor kitchen or fire feature, utilities for a casita, or new drip lines after a landscape redesign.

Those runs cross rock mulch, planting beds, flagstone and sprinkler lines. We bring compact equipment, lay spoil on tarps and hand dig through tight spots.

Getting a trench approved and dug inside the gates

  1. 1

    Check HOA requirements

If the project changes the exterior, your HOA's architectural committee may need to approve it. We can provide a written scope of work for your application.

  2. 2

    Arrange gate access

We coordinate access through your community's gate and follow its working hours and contractor vehicle rules.

  3. 3

    Mark everything

We request a New Mexico 811 locate, and you or your landscaper flag the private sprinkler and lighting lines the locate won't show.

  4. 4

    Dig, then wait for inspection

We dig to the depth your installer specifies. Many lines need inspection before backfill, so the trench stays open and covered or fenced until it passes.

  5. 5

    Backfill and restore the surface

We compact the backfill and leave the surface ready for rock, plants or pavers to go back.

What adds time to a Tanoan trench

Length is rarely the issue here. These are.

Rock below the surface
Decomposed granite digs fine, but buried rock in this part of the Northeast Heights can mean breaking it out by machine or hand.
Hardscape in the way
Crossing a patio, walk or driveway means cutting and removing a section, or having the installer bore under it.
Sprinkler and lighting lines
Every crossing has to be exposed and protected, which is slower than open digging.
Limited access
Narrow side yards and walls can rule out larger machines.

Slopes and the golf course

On sloped lots, a backfilled trench running downhill can turn into a small channel in a monsoon storm if it isn't compacted well. We compact in layers and shape the surface so water doesn't follow the trench toward the house, a neighbor's lot or the golf course.

Tanoan trenching questions

Will you cut my sprinkler lines?

We expose any line that's marked or that we find, and work around it. Unmarked lines sometimes get nicked in heavily planted yards; if that happens we tell you right away so it can be repaired before the system runs.

Can the gas line for my outdoor kitchen share a trench with the electrical?

That's decided by code and by your licensed gas installer and electrician. If they want separate trenches or a set separation, we dig to it.

Can you put the rock mulch back after?

We set it aside where practical and rake it back over the trench. Replanting or replacing damaged plants is usually done by you or your landscaper, and the quote will say what we include.
